I got a free book today. A signed copy of diamond fire. Left by the author ( never heard of him ) in one of the holiday cottages I clean.

I’ve got dozens of fiction books that I want to get rid of. Charity shops won’t take them but I don’t want to chuck them out.

That’s nuts . Do they give a reason? Have you got a local buy/ sell/ free cycle group?

Its the same here - Charity shops don't have the storage space for books - which is sad as they're the main reason I go into a charity shop.
A lot of the 2nd hand books I buy online from places like Music Magpie, Awesome Books, Abe Books have come from charity shops as they have stickers on. There must/should be a way of giving books to a charity who could sell them on in bulk to a dealer for resale.

I was asked for a load of books by the local scout leader for their jumble sale. Our charity shops seem to still take them and like Veggie I only go into the charity shops for books. I refuse to pay some of the exorbitant prices some of the nationwide 'charity' shops charge though. Someone close by puts some books out on their roadside garden wall for passers by to choose. Also tomorrow is our local Paperback Exchange at the Church. Free books, coffee, homemade jams, chutneys, bread and and produce for sale and a right old natter, it's heaven.

Paperback exchange! Like the sound of that.
I put unwanted books outside for passers-by, there's a local church where you can leave books in the porch and take what you want and, a bit further away, a old telephone box book and seed library (help yourself). Its not on my regular route though so haven't been there.

They've put a defibrillator in our nearest phone box. Not a lot of use to most of us round here as it 300yds away and if I'm CPRing Paul in a panic on the phone to emergency services I don't see me racing down through the village to get the defib - he'd have snuffed it by the time I got back. But it is free

I may not have left the house today but the freebie swaps go on..............the wine press has been collected and I've arranged to pick up nearly 5l of Ecover Fabric softener and some Michaelmas (I think) daisies tomorrow.

Picked up 5 copies of "The Idler" magazine yesterday. I've been meaning to read these for ages but too lazy (and mean) to buy them!! Hoping to pick up some hints on wasting even more time.
Gave away an old electric fire that had been in the garage doing nothing and collected a tall, 5'-6' metal grid thingy with 4 plate glass shelves that clip onto it. The shelves will probably end up on top of the dresser to protect it or in the GH on the racks. The metal grid is freestanding so may become a pea or bean support or, on its side, a fence to deter dogs/chooks.

We noticed when visiting our daughter in Cheltenham everyone puts unwanted books, toys in fact anything they don’t want on the pavement outside their homes for anyone to take. Unfortunately it’s not a thing here. I think it’s a great idea!
