Things I think I've ruled out:
Airports
Initials of American presidents/vice presidents
Currencies
The corresponding number to the letter of the alphabet being relevant
Weights and measures

My best guess is they are acronyms that I don't recognise. If they are, any chance of a clue as to what category they might fall under? Or am I barking up the wrong tree with that as well?

Big clue that to World airports! I would never have gotten it without looking it up though!
