Mychorrhizal fungi
Posted by: JJB - 26-03-2021, 01:30 PM - Replies (7)

Last year, I bought some soluble myco fungi in a box.  I'd never heard of it before.  I used it as directed to water the plants in the old GH border when planting out and when removing the old plants in autumn I was pleased to see lots of white fungi strands within the  soil, so the fungi was thriving, hopefully doing its job.    I will need to improve the border soil in the new GH but I'm loath to use the horse  manure I have, as it's very seedy.  I'll probably make manure tea with it and use it that way.  I have my own compost to incorporate as well and will give the plants a dose of fungi.
My query is, do I have to repeat treatment of the fungi each year or is it a one time thing? Should I dose the old GH borders at planting a second time?

  Feeding garlic and onions
Posted by: Roitelet - 26-03-2021, 10:23 AM - Replies (5)

The question is should I? They were planted in the Autumn and are growing well. I wondered if in order to get some big cloves from the Garlic I should give them a feed of some sort.
All suggestions gratefully received, thanks.

  Newbie here

Hi everyone, I'm very new to growing things. My name is Becky and I'm attempting to cultivate a window sill garden in my small I live in with my other half.

I bought a bay plant to encourage myself to keep a plant alive and have since starting growing parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme and unidentified chilli's. Things are growing and I reported my sage but worrying I'd damaged them I planted more seeds but after years of believing I was hopeless at growing, I seem to have a small family growing.

I have to thank someone on here and introducing me to this place, I hope I can get to know you all and happy to have found this forum.

  Salsify and Scorzonera

Has anyone grown Salsify or Scorzonera (Black Salsify) please?
They have long skinny roots that. reputedly, taste like oysters. They also have pretty flowers in pink and yellow so perfect for my Edible, Ornamental garden.
I'm wondering whether they can be grown together or whether they would cross and the next generation would have orangey coloured flowers and taste of kippers?

  Eternal tomatoes
Posted by: Veggie - 24-03-2021, 04:09 PM - Replies (4)

I could have titled this Hanging tomatoes or Winter Storage tomatoes but "Eternal" sound so much more interesting. Smile

Franchi/Seeds of Italy suggest that Principe Borghese tomato plants can be pulled up at the end of the season, hung upside down and the toms can be used over winter.

I've read about other toms that can be treated in the same way and they seem to be mostly Italian varieties (names forgotten at the moment).

Has anyone tried this technique and did it work?

  hydrogen cyanide

Just want to share this discovery with you all. We all know blackthorn is a nasty piece of work and you should seek medical attention if you get a splinter. I didn’t realise how bad it could be. My neighbour got a splinter in her finger last week. Didn’t do anything about it straight away. Sunday her finger was massive. She finally went to A&E Monday. They sent her straight to Glasgow hospital and she was in surgery last night. Not sure what they did. Apparently as the blackthorn brakes down it releases hydrogen cyanide.

Apologies if we already have a thread!

What are you growing, when are you planting? (I know Spec already has an experiment underway)

What do you wear in the garden?
Posted by: Veggie - 23-03-2021, 12:31 AM - Replies (18)

Ladies, have you seen the Sarah Raven pinafore? Only £64.95 to wear something that makes you look like you're in a Victorian orphanage!!
https://www.sarahraven.com/gardening-kit...nafore.htm

Mine's an old pair of jeans and a weatherbeaten Cornish Fishing smock that I've had for about 50 years, literally!! Cheap clogs unless I'm digging out brambles when its steel toe capped rigger boots. Brambles can be quite heavy, you know.Wink

Gentleman, if you wear a pinafore, there's no need to be embarrassed. We're all friends here (mostly). Wink
