The garden from scratch
Posted by: Small chilli - 29-03-2021, 09:55 AM - Replies (219)

I’m going to use this thread for thinking out loud about what I actually want ( how the hell do I know!  Huh ). What is actually needed ( everything & a side order of miracles ). How I’m going to do it all . What plants? What materials ( paths, fencing, structures) ? What layout / configuration ? And all the things I’ve not yet considered !

I’m going to be adding photos , lists of plants , ideas, just everything.

I’d love your suggestions, help & advice along the way  Cool .

( I have a horrible feeling I’ve already started this thread somewhere else! If you find it (veggie  Wink   ) can you move it or link it to here please    Blush )

  Chicken egg thief?
Posted by: Scarlet - 28-03-2021, 01:27 PM - Replies (18)

I haven't kept chickens for a few years.
I have no neighbours that live nearby that keep chickens either.

Yesterday I found a chickens egg in the lawn buried by a tree. It looked like there was a little hole made for it and it had been revealed by strimming the grass in that area.

I was a bit curious and cracked it open - just to smell Big Grin as I couldn't believe it had laid there to rest for a few years. It was fresh!

So just this morning I'm clearing a patch of long grass and crap from an area where I want to put my sweet peas....and there's another one?!!

Answers on a postcard please.....

Have a windowsill?

Then grow Microgreens aka Living salads.
Found this https://www.wsbentley.co.uk/explore-more/ from one of the supermarket growers that may give you some ideas.
It has me. Smile

  Looking a bit yellow
Posted by: Eyren - 28-03-2021, 07:24 AM - Replies (6)

The leaves of my sweet peppers (Lipstick and Sweet Chocolate) and one of my chillies (Trinidad Perfume) are looking more chartreuse than green at the moment Sad

I thought I would turn down my heated propagator to 20ºC and let them sit under the lights (currently on 16 hours a day) until the weather improves - does that sound sensible? My okra has germinated and I'm not holding my breath over the aubergines, so I don't need the propagator to be so hot any more.

  General feeding practices (veg)

Morning Folks

Following on from the recent  "Feeding garlic and onions" thread I wondered if people follow a regular feeding regime for all of their veg?

I still consider myself new to all this growing veg malarkey and to date my feeding has been haphazard.

My assumption is a monthly feed with whatever you can lay your hands on?

Do the likes of growmore/chicken pellets really need working in or can you just scatter and water?

  Wall flowers
Posted by: Can the Man - 26-03-2021, 09:12 PM - Replies (4)

my wife has fond memories of my father and my uncles wallflowers and the super smells from them. She asked me to sow some around our fences, however, I don’t see any for sale in the local stores. Just wondering if anybody has some home saved seeds they would send me, I’m prepared to pay for the seeds and postage, or alternatively try get seeds they need in exchange.

  Plants to aid your environment
