The cottages I clean on a Saturday has a vase of fresh flowers every week. I’ve just brought home the old flowers
Stocks, sweet William ( I think ) , roses and a yellow feathery thing ( no idea). I was going to try to take cuttings. What’s the chances?

It’s only the roses that are looking really sorry for them selves.

Please raise a glass with me today, to celebrate our first birthday Smile

I have personally enjoyed every minute of our journey and whilst not the biggest, I think we would be hard pushed to find a happier place to talk about gardening and the trials and tribulations of life in general.

25000 posts and 3000 attachments and not once have we had to use Veggies pointy stick! Probably because she made most of them!!

Happy birthday  Garden and Gossip

  Deer in the Garden
Posted by: PyreneesPlot - 13-05-2021, 09:27 AM - Replies (5)

I'm guessing my hedge isn't thick enough or prickly enough to keep this pregnant doe out of the garden. She has just crossed a 2m wide by 1.5m deep ditch and then pushed through blackthorn, briar rose, bramble and bright blue binder twine!

She is very fond of apple and pear leaves, fresh maple leaves but especially new rose shoots and aqualegia flowers. Very pretty but, like wild boar, roe numbers are rapidly increasing here and that isn't necessarily good for them; although we are surrounded by forest, it is dwindling which brings the deer and boar into more contact with people, traffic and loose dogs.

Saw this article - 18 Self seeding Flowers, herbs and veg https://www.ruralsprout.com/self-seeding...SLiZX2m25U

To save you reading it, they are:-

Don't know about your experiences but some of those haven't seeded for me and there are a few that I've never grown!
Some have been very successful - Calendula, Alyssum, Nigella, Cerinthe (though think its gone now), violets, Parsley, Rocket, lettuce (in GH) Kale.
I'm minded to grow all of these and see how well they do - I like them all and would be happy to have them running riot here.

  Fertilisers and feed
Posted by: Scarlet - 12-05-2021, 01:59 PM - Replies (13)

Just wondering what you all use to feed your plants?

I've always used just my wormery feed and I make up a nettle and a comfrey soup occasionally for my veg. I have bought in rose feed as I do think it makes a huge difference.

Many of you know I planted a hedge a couple of years ago and I think I could help give it a boost if I fed it. It's a mixed native hedge- hawthorn, bird cherry, hornbeam, hazel, a few crab apple, wild rose,

What would you use if anything?

  Lichen
Posted by: Jimny14 - 11-05-2021, 11:48 AM - Replies (1)

Over the last year I have noticed a significant increase in the amount and diversity of lichens on my trees. I have even seen lichen growing on a couple of traffic light poles near work in the centre of town. I hope that as things open up again that it stays around but I fear the increase in traffic may reduce it again.
Has anyone else noticed more lichens recently?
