Growing chard from runners!
Posted by: Veggie - 11-05-2022, 05:31 PM - Replies (16)

I grew a few chard and perpetual spinach plants in the GH over winter and they are massive - took over the GH.  The photo was taken about a month ago when I'd started clearing the chard on the right. You can see some in the bucket!!
If you harvest the tops of the plants (the young tender bits)  the plant produces side shoots. Nothing odd about that, you may say.  When these side shoots touch the ground, they root, a bit like strawberry runners. Result  - more plants when you sever the cord. No wonder it was a jungle of chard.
I've put some of these unrooted sideshoots into water and, when they root, I'll plant them in the garden. I've already transplanted some chard that was bolting to add to the self seeded clumps around the garden.

  Damson pest

Any ideas what is causing this on my damson leaves?
Distorted green “nobbles around the edge of each leaf.
Initially thought it was aphids or other bugs, but it’s part of the leaf.

  Non stop begonias
Posted by: JJB - 11-05-2022, 09:35 AM - Replies (7)

I've never tried non stop begonias,  but after Spec mentioned then, I gave them a look.  I fancy their blousey look. Is it too late to get some corms and bring them into life or would it be better to try plug plants?  If plants, do they form corms for next year? Or should I give up for this year?

  Cross pollination

I’m hoping to save seeds from some onion shallot zebrune .
Looks like they’re going to flower at the same time as the ornamental alliums.
Will the cross?

Apologies if this is a really dumb question    Blush .

  Growing Different Cucumbers Together

Probably a little late to be asking this as I planted out the first five this afternoon, but I vaguely recall problems with growing different cucumbers together.
They are all open pollinated, old varieties and are growing outside.

Would anyone think it useful to make a library of common wild flower/weed seedlings so if anyone isn't sure what it us we can check against some pictures?

  Haylage
Posted by: Veggie - 05-05-2022, 02:52 PM - Replies (3)

I'm not really sure what Haylage is but I've been given 4 black bags of it - bought in error for soft hay for chinchillas - not really sure what they are either but their loss is my gain. Big Grin

My original thought was chicken bedding but, is there a better use for it?  Mulch, earthing up spuds? It seems to have seed heads so I'm not sure about spreading it around too much.
Any advice welcome. Big Grin

  Atomic grape
Posted by: Proserpina - 05-05-2022, 02:17 PM - No Replies

I have six atomic grape plants. They were all sown in the same compost, at the same time, were potted on at the same time, and have been sat on the same windowsill. Three of the plants are the same height as most of my other tomato varieties and three are rather short. The three tall ones are all a similar height to each other, and the three short ones are also the same as each other.

I really need to get rid of some of my tomato plants, but I'm rather tempted to grow all of these on, just to see what happens!
