  Glass jars
Posted by: Small chilli - 11-10-2023, 06:01 PM - Replies (3)

I’ve just found out from a canning fb group. If you store your berries in glass jars. They will last for weeks! It works for any berries. The trick is don’t do anything to them, including washing. Works for freshly picked or from the shop apparently. The poster said the ones in the photo have been in the jar for 3 weeks. They look perfect.

I might have to pick some blackberries. Just to try it for myself.

  The growing bug

Has anyone got the growing bug for next year already? I definitely have. I’m making lot of plans  Big Grin .

Especially as I’ve learned we’ve been given incorrect information about needing planning for my big tunnels. We don’t need planning so they can go up before we finish building  Big Grin Big Grin   Big Grin .

Has anyone read this book? I’ve just found it on the Franchi website. Never heard of it before, but the title and write up. Are holding my interest. Just wondering if anyone has actually read it. I’ve found it cheaper on eBay.

Another book I’d like recommendations for is one on cucurbits. A good general all rounder, variety, growing, tips & cooking if such a thing exists.

  No Shop October
Posted by: Veggie - 09-10-2023, 11:35 PM - Replies (8)

I have a new Challenge for myself but feel free to join me. Its called No Shop October and I have to get through the rest of the month without going shopping for food (apart from the £5 Pantry which isn't really a shop). A bit like the start of lockdown (remember that!!) when we couldn't easily go shopping so ate from our store cupboards and freezer.
Its time I investigated the back of the cupboard and the bottom of the freezer to see how much space I can make. The big freezer is full with lots of fruit and veg from the garden but I still have things I want to freeze and its a constant challenge to shuffle the stuff around to squeeze in some more. I'm sure there's some past its best food at the bottom. Its like digging up hidden treasure when you have no idea what you'll find but you know that something is there, waiting to be discovered.
So that's my plan for the next 3 weeks. Care to join me. Big Grin

  Storing potatoes
Posted by: Veggie - 08-10-2023, 09:05 PM - Replies (2)

Sometimes you want your potatoes to sprout/chit, but not when you want to store them for eating. I've just read that if you put an apple in with your potatoes they will stay sprout-free.
I'm going to try it when I next have some potatoes - nothing ventured. Big Grin

For the record:-
[Image: 1f34e.png][Image: 1f954.png]KEEP POTATOES FROM SPROUTING!!![Image: 1f954.png][Image: 1f34e.png]
Do you hate those ugly sprouts that form on your potatoes after just a couple of weeks? It turns out an apple a day just doesn't only keep the Dr. away but will also keep those sprouts away and also help the potatoes last longer.
The apples and potatoes storage tip has also been proven by America's Test Kitchen. In their experiment, potatoes stored with an apple stayed firm and sprout-free even after eight weeks, compared to potatoes stored without an apple; they turned out "largely soft, shriveled, and sad looking." So add an apple and save your potatoes.
Remove potatoes from packaging and place in a plastic bin and add an apple.

Get your Votes in everyone please.  You have until 22nd October to Vote. You can expect to be reminded and nagged if you don't Vote. Big Grin

Disappointingly, there weren't many entries this year. On the bright side, it shouldn't take you very long to decide which entry is the best!!

  Seed price inflation!
Posted by: Veggie - 02-10-2023, 06:08 PM - Replies (13)

Are the prices of seeds rocketing this year?
Just been looking at Mr F's seeds and there seem to be quite a few seed packets that are more than £4 for a handful of seeds. For example Cucumber Socrates F1 5 seeds = £4.59.

At what point do you decide that the individual seed cost is too much, bearing in mind the risk that it may not grow, may die before maturity or costs more than you could buy the veg for in a shop? Taking the cucumber as an example - each seed costs about 92p. How much is a cucumber in the shop? OK, you may be lucky and each plant will produce far more than 1 cucumber but there are no guarantees.

Do you have an upper limit to what you would pay for a packet? I seem to have a cut off point of £2 unless there are lots of seeds in the packet, like Franchi seeds.

  Sign wording
Posted by: Small chilli - 01-10-2023, 09:31 AM - Replies (9)

Help please

I’m going to make a sign for the area next to the post box. Where I’ve planted daffodils & sown foxglove. Even though it has a little horseshoe fence around it. People still walk on it. So they can come have a chat with us when we’re working in the garden. ( Just come in the gate people we don’t bite  Rolleyes  )
I’d like your help with the wording. It’s not going to be a massive sign. But hopefully it’ll be noticeable as I’m going to attempt to paint a daffodil on it.
So far I’ve come up with.

sleeping daffodils stay off their bed.
Or
Get off the ………….. daffodils !

I’d like something witty rather than my usual sarcasm with underlying aggression    Big Grin .

Thank you

  Isaac Newton's apple tree auction
Posted by: Veggie - 28-09-2023, 02:46 PM - Replies (15)

"Get your bids in!

Auction ends at 8pm on September 29th
There is not long left to take part in our once-in-a-lifetime auction to own a piece of living history, in association with the National Trust.
The trees offered in our auction are propagated from the actual tree that inspired Newton's Theory of Gravity, found at Newton's childhood home at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire."

There are 10 trees up for auction, all propagated from Isaac Newton's tree. Without looking, how much would you bid for one of these trees and, how much do you think they'll sell for?
