All suggestions gratefully received.

  A dedicated seed bed.
Posted by: Veggie - 03-11-2021, 05:23 PM - Replies (13)

An idea I saw somewhere!
Setting aside a bed just for growing plants you want to save seed from. For example - a tripod for a couple of beans, a few peas...........that, once planted would not be picked but left to seed. Some squash that would be hand pollinated and bagged - or some flowers. Anything in fact from which you want to save seeds.
Its tempting, when you have a row of plants, to pick them all and forget you want to save some. When you remember, they may be the end of season leftovers that may not be the best ones to grow from next year.
Waddya reckon?

  Coldframes

Ok....so what are these really for?

Are they areas to keep pots protected during winter? Is a greenhouse any different?
Are they a solid base , gravel, or earth so you can grow straight into them.

I'm growing ranunculas ( I know I may have told you already Big Grin) I don't want them taking up space in my greenhouse, they get damaged by the weather.

Is a coldframe my option? What kind of thing would you make?

  Filling the gaps (Hawthorns)
Posted by: Jay - 02-11-2021, 01:03 PM - Replies (5)

We have a road with hawthorns along the edge which have now become trees leaving big gaps. Any ideas on what to fill the gaps with or should we just plant more hawthorn? Has to be able to withstand a bit of wind too. TIA.

  Rant Alert !

This seems appropriate with the climate conference kicking off.
As well as gardening, we look after 2 gîtes - clean, change and do the laundry between guests - and the owners of one have told us not only to leave both the empty fridge freezers running, but to leave the heating set to 20 degrees,  day and night. They have nobody booked before summer next year.
Although we need the income,  I personally would rather not work for them. Am I being too sensitive?!

  Carlin peas
Posted by: Veggie - 28-10-2021, 05:51 PM - Replies (4)

Curious to know whether any of our G&G family, from oop North have eaten Carlin peas/Parched peas on Bonfire Night or any other night!
From what I've read they were sold by street vendors in paper pokes https://hodmedods.co.uk/blogs/recipes/pa...arlin-peas
I have some Carlin peas from my Hodmedod box in to soak overnight. Any inspiring ideas for what happens to them after cooking?

As I’ve been incredibly bored isolating because he had Covid and It’s been to wet to play in the garden. The crochet hooks came out. Our friends that are also building. They’re going full grand designs . Over budget, over time and pregnant ( a girl )  Rolleyes  Big Grin . Anyway I don’t usually make things for rug rats because I really don’t like them  Big Grin . Boredom can make you do odd things.

Anyway 3 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of mittens, a hat, a cardigan & a blanket later . Now working on a gift basket to put them all in.

Colours are a bit odd because that’s all I had.

  Hibachi Grill
Posted by: Can the Man - 26-10-2021, 11:21 PM - Replies (3)

I am a big fan of everything MasterChef, especially MasterChef Australia. On the various series competitors cook on an Hibachi Grill, it burns very hot so cooks quick and fast but it cooks indoors with special white charcoal which smoke is non carcinogenic in actual fact it’s not supposed to give off very much smoke unless you burn something.
Great news my kids bought me one for my recent birthday but I have not been able to get this white charcoal anywhere locally, it’s referred to as Binchotan, I have found it on Amazon but mainly as charcoal for water filtration.
Just wondering if any of you foodies has any experience with cooking on one of these ?.

Root Parsley is not your normal parsley but has edible, parsnip-like roots  as well as edible leaves.
Real Seeds has seeds and information https://www.realseeds.co.uk/parsnips.html
I have old seeds for Atika, Hermes and Kinga/Hamburg Parsley - goodness knows how that happened - must have been freebies Wink

Has anyone ever grown it? if so, what's your verdict?
