Sweetcorn

How knowledgeable about sweetcorn are you folks?

I find a lot of guff is spouted about the 'types' of sweetcorn and the varieties that can be grown together.
I like sweetcorn Swift F1 which Garden Focussed classify as sugar enhanced (se/se+) but Kings and Simplyseed classify as shrunken (sh2)
As DT Brown had a sale and I saw that sweetcorn Picasso was a synergistic type and  (they say) could be grown with any other, I ordered some, thinking to experiment  a little.
Looking at some other site in the US it says that synergistic corn should be isolated from sh2.
I'm now in a quandary, the garden isn't big enough for two incompatible types, but I might succeed with successional  sowing so the two types don't flower at the same time.
Some days life gets complicated.  I may just stick with Swift.

Anyone know any different?

When transplanting how deep do they go
Posted by: Spec - 12-03-2021, 11:59 AM - Replies (2)

Some of my seedlings look a bit leggy, both flower and veg, I know that tomatoes can be planted up to the seed leaf but can you do the same with other seedlings, or are there some plants that you can't plant deeper than the the root ball?

Question Rainbow carrots
Posted by: Vinny - 10-03-2021, 02:08 PM - Replies (11)

Just ordered some rainbow carrot seed to give them a try. Has anyone on here grown them and are they worth it. Idea

I thought they may add a bit of colour to the plate but wondered about taste ie are they bland or quite tasty? Huh

Its a day of questions for me and I am  waiting to see if I get any more feedback (couple of ideas up til now) from my Spinach query before ordering seed. Smile

Question Spinach
Posted by: Vinny - 10-03-2021, 12:12 PM - Replies (14)

I like eating baby spinach and lightly cooked bigger leaves. I always fail miserably growing it though, usually jetting off to seed soon after sowing! Sick

Can anyone give me a recommended variety for taste and not being liable to bolting? Huh

I also toyed with the idea of using it as a green manure once I was finished with it. To get spinach year round would I need to plant different varieties?

Everyone has something they just can't grow and spinach is one of my constant failures. Rolleyes

That's enough questions for now. Sick

  Seed availability

Had to go out this evening to get some milk so went down to lidels when it was quite, going through the entrance doors they have set up a seed stand where you just can't miss it, so how could I possibly walk past it, I have had a search through the seed stand looking for pansy seeds at tesco and had my daughter search for them a morrisons, without success, so I thought I would get them in lidels, but none there either, so does anyone know if there is shortage of pansy seeds this year, if so is there a shortage of other seed varieties
