I was looking at my onions Friday and thinking I ought to give them a feed.....yesterday I got some BFB to feed them, Allium Leaf Miner had beat me to it,  160 onions with  collapsed twisted leaves.

  Birthday ideas
Posted by: Jimny14 - 31-05-2021, 02:17 PM - Replies (24)

My wife has enquired today if I could draw up  list of things I'd like for my birthday.
Problem is I'm a simple soul and think myself very lucky that I don't want for much. I was treated to a hori hori and japanese hand hoe a while ago and I love these.
Is there anything (gardening related or not) that you have that is really useful or that you received as a gift having never thought of getting for yourself?

  Perennial Garlic or Onion?
Posted by: Veggie - 31-05-2021, 02:12 PM - Replies (5)

I found this clump of alliums when clearing a bed. To the best of my knowledge they've never flowered but it was obviously an allium from the smell of the leaves - which are flat, like garlic and leeks, not hollow like onions. I actually thought it was an ornamental allium.
When I dug them up, I didn't expect to find these bulbs and they're a reasonable size for eating too - I know because I've just eaten one raw! The bulb was splitting into 2 cloves and tasted like a mild garlic.
The skins have a reddish tint.
If anyone can identify them, I'd be grateful. I'm going to split the clump and replant somewhere random!!

  Kohlrabi
Posted by: Proserpina - 31-05-2021, 12:30 PM - Replies (13)

Does anyone have much experience of kohlrabi growing, especially late sowing for a late Autumn/Winter harvest? Realseeds seem to suggest that this is possible, and I'm wondering whether they might be something I could grow on a window sill from a June sowing until October, and then plant out when (if!) I have a garden? Or will they be enormous by then, or hate being transplanted?

Growing carrots for the first time and have just thinned them out, do I still need to protect them with netting?

FYI they are in pots.

  Yard long beans
Posted by: Roitelet - 30-05-2021, 02:11 PM - Replies (3)

Has anyone grown these. Planted some in modules then planted them out in the tunnel. They are rowing very slowly and not looking as well as I think they should. The next lot, destined for the bean frame out doors are rubbish and not growing at all and some have died off. All the other beans are looking fine.

Has anyone got any tips please.

  Vertical Squash

Each year I seem to forget just how much space it takes when growing squash. I have 8 uchiki kuri plants and 6 butternuts and I'm going to struggling to squeeze them all in. I grow some together with sweetcorn in a bed and that works well, not tried the 3 sisters yet as that sounds a bit messy?. I also grow some in compost bins (full of horse muck) and let them trail over the sides so I know they can cope with trailing but I know some people grow them upwards. I probably have room in one of the CFB beds to give this a shot and while I doubt a bamboo structure is going to be strong enough I may try 1 uchiki this way for a challenge.
Anyone tried growing them upwards?
