A pair of woodcock in the garden today. They were about yesterday as well.
^^^wow, never seen one of them.
I'd never heard of that bird either so I goggled it and this came up:
"Almost all who have eaten them say that woodcock is the king of game birds, greater even than canvasback duck. The flavor of woodcock is said to be strong, gamey-in-a-good-way, and like nothing else. They say the earth moves when you bite into one that has been perfectly cooked: pink, and just a little bloody."
Sounds a bit exciting if you ask me!
I can't read Woodcock without thinking of that Woodchuck saying -
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
Try it with Woodcock.

What they obviously forgot to mention was the traditional method for cooking them which is whole with guts still in and it skewered with its own beak.

Buummppphhh!! That's me falling back down to earth!! Yeah, that's not appetising at all.
Saw the first swallow of the Spring yesterday looking quite perky after its couple of thousand mile return trip.
A heron sitting on the roof, eyeing up the pond and a Brimstone butterfly sitting on the white comfrey.
A very brief visit from a stonechat, a first in the garden!
And lots of griffon vultures again - they're becoming quite a common sight.
We had a Sparrow hawk sat in an apple tree watching pigeons.
