Early May Snapshot

Not a photo but a Snapshot of your progress in the garden/plot so far. Are you on track?

I thought I was way behind, blaming the weather, but its not so bad after all.
I've planted Onion sets, mangetout, CFB, Broad beans, cucumbers, some tomatoes and courgettes. The direct-sown carrots, leeks and beetroot are emerging and I have red cabbage and tomatoes waiting to be planted out. Also have leeks and beetroot in modules waiting for action (mine).
I need to sow lettuce and various salad leaves, more beans, courgettes and squash, outdoor cucumbers, peas or mangetout, kale.
Undecided about whether to grow parsnips, turnips or any other roots. I don't have much joy with carrots either. Roots and I don't get on too well.
Potatoes will be bunged in somewhere but not grown seriously.

I'm sure I've overlooked something but, if I can grow everything I've listed, I'll be a happy little chicken.

  Nasturtiums

Question for the panel please.
Do Climbing Nasturtiums really climb or do they need tying to trellis, canes, wire, whatever? In other words, are they scramblers across the ground that can be persuaded to "climb"?
The packet of "Climbing Mix" that I have says they "easily cover sheds and walls or trail in baskets". Seems a bit boastful to me. I don't want to sow anything that requires TLC.

  Ticks

Last summer we were plagued by ticks in the garden which was a real worry especially as we have a dog.  Does anyone know of anything you can buy to spray the ground to either deter them or kill them?

  Famous or infamous

Following on from Knotty’s brilliant where we live thread. Very interesting reading    Cool .

Do any of the places you have lived have anything special about? Awards, famous for something? Not necessarily well known stuff. Like Stratford the home of Shakespeare.

Chard the place we lived in Somerset had at the time the highest rates of domestic violence per capita. Friday night’s, fight night  Rolleyes . Hopefully you will all have reasons to be considerably more proud of the places you’ve lived than me  Blush

I have two 6 x 8 gh. One is slightly warmer but more shaded, the other slightly colder but gets more sun.

I usually put the cherry and slightly smaller toms in one and the larger and beefsteak varieties in the other.  Should I put big toms in the sunny but colder gh or the sheltered one?

Why we live where we do
Posted by: Knotty - 01-05-2023, 11:40 AM - Replies (10)

We were talking about all the times we have moved and lived in different areas of England which got me thinking what makes us move and what we like about where we live.

We originally lived in the South West but we moved about a couple of hours away to Portsmouth area because of work commitments, moving 4 times but had tiny gardens and found we were looking for something larger.  We then decided to move to East Anglia which is a dry County and quite a good growing climate and we bought a cottage with the garden we were looking for.  We loved it and worked our socks off getting the garden how we wanted and grew lots of veg stuff and joy of joy it already had 2 good greenhouses.

However itchy feet got us again and we moved to the North East.  Although the garden was on the small side we did manage to buy extra land from local farmer and started again in landscaping the garden.  Trouble was we found it was so cold and the growing season was too short so we had a rethink and decided to split our time between Spain and UK which was great while it lasted but by April/May it was far too hot!

So we moved back to South West England and love it, we grow lots of veg and fruits, on the whole the climate is good and mild winters.  This is now home and I can't see us wanting to move again.

So come on guys lets hear your story.

Green fly in my greenhouse already!
Posted by: Scarlet - 28-04-2023, 10:30 AM - Replies (13)

I bough some mint plants at a plant fair about a month ago.... it had lots if white fly on it, washed them off and split them up to make extra plants. Its the variegated variety which I haven't got.

I've been very vigilant on what plants I've brought in but this morning I've spied a couple of green fly. Sad
Now what to do - i've squished the half dozen i could see. They are all around the mint. They have gone out....but the greenfly were on some tomato plants that were next to it.

Im tempted to sacrifice these black cherry toms... Sad I really don't want to battle with a ton of greenfly all summer.
