Autumn Sown Hardy annuals
Posted by: Farendwoman - 14-02-2023, 02:17 PM - Replies (15)

Advice please.
Planting out my autumn sown sweet peas this week .
What else can I put out now??
I’ve got about half a dozen sturdy daucus, same number of larkspur and just four ammi visnaga.
I know that these are hardy - but seeing as I’ve lost absolutely loads of seedlings through the winter, do you think it’s a  bit soon?

  Dahlia propagation

So I generally split my tubers in the Spring to make more, some just wiggle apart, if they dont I will often cut throught the stem or cut off one of the "legs" if it has some eyes.

I took cuttings a few years back - loved the process, but found my strike luck wasnt as successful as it could have been, had lots just not taking due to "misting" either too wet or not keeping hydrated enough... I also got a little overwhelmed with space issues

Anyway, last September I decided I wanted more varieties that were suitable for cutting. I had already ditched a few of the big Decoratives in favour of the balls or poms. Gluton for punishment - Im having another go Smile

My order has arrived and been set in trays - I have some eyes already. Wish me luck.

  Basket Making

I love trying new things and have a friend who always buys presents - Im pretty useless at that Wink hate spending money just because of a certain date. So over the years we've come to a compromise - we do a day out instead. Last year we booked jekka herbs, Kew Gardens and David Austin roses.

Friday we went on a basket making course - a guy local to me. We had a fabulous day. Pretty chuffed with my basket - Im sure it will come in handy Smile

Flowers I want to grow but can't!
Posted by: Veggie - 10-02-2023, 11:10 PM - Replies (7)

I'd like a garden filled with sunflowers, poppies, cornflowers - nothing unusual there. However, I fail miserably with them all. The sunflowers end up about a foot tall with a flower no larger than a dandelion. Poppies that apparently self seed everywhere for others, put in a meagre show then disappear. Cornflowers, those bright blue flowers that are included in Easy-grow packets for children, are not so easy for an old biddy like me.

Am I alone or do others struggle with certain flowers?

Wink Today's a Special Day
Posted by: Veggie - 10-02-2023, 01:56 PM - Replies (6)

Have you noticed how every day seems to be a Special Day of some sort? It can mark an Anniversary, a Saint, an Animal, an Event or even, like today, a Food. I thought it would be nice to get in the spirit of these Special Days and do something appropriate to mark them.  Cool

Today, 10th February is World Pulses Day. https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-pulses-day
I'll celebrate by cooking some beans to eat tonight.

  Let’s talk mushrooms
Posted by: Small chilli - 08-02-2023, 11:19 PM - Replies (9)

Has anyone ever had any success with any of the mushroom kits, plugs, spawn.
I’m considering having a go at growing some of the slight more unusual varieties. I’ve been looking at buy fresh mushrooms deliveries online. Oddly enough I’ve not found any that offer delivery up here. So growing my own is the way forward, if it’s worth it. Obviously there will be foraging in the autumn of the well known wild varieties.
So any advise would be appreciated.

  2023 Spuds

I have started chitting my first earlies, they are called Solist. I will only grow them in the poly tunnel in raised beds. I grew them last year and they were a great success, so I ordered 2 x 2kg bags of seed. I will not grow any main crops this year as the last 2-3 years were disasters. They will be sown in March after St. Patrick’s Day and the shoots will be covered with fleece at night when they appear.

Supports for determinate tomatoes in pots
Posted by: JJB - 01-02-2023, 11:25 AM - Replies (7)

I grow a few toms in pots on the patio usually small determinates. They always get straggly and droopy.  As  I'm fed up with twigs, sticks and string, I'm considering buying something st4onger that will poke into the pots to give a bit of support.  Along the same lines I don't grow bush toms in the ground outdoors because they droop and get manky. I might even consider a support or two for bigger varieties.

Any advice on what and where to start looking?
