Tomato blight is always a question of when not if, but late June is a bit early. I've been stripping off the infected leaves almost daily, but today the blight hit the stems so I've chopped the plants off to below that point, but don't hold out much hope of harvesting very much. There are a few trusses, but one pineapple now has one truss and no leaves at all!!

The infected plants are marmande, bradywine & pineapple and are the first ones I planted out. Interestingly they are also the ones that stick out beneath the roof of the tomato shelter so have been rained on a little. The ground is mulched to avoid spash back - this is photo is last year's frame before planting with a straw mulch; I've gone back to grass clippings this year.     


Today I sprayed with Bordeaux mixture in the hope of saving the rest, but it is probably too late.

I was going to have a go as saving spring onion seeds. 
There’s no info on the real seeds saving guide, I’ve just looked.
To be honest I don’t even know if spring onions are annual or biannual    .

Will my selected Ones flower this year?

We all know there will probably be a glut.  In fact some of us are already half way there. 
What's your favourite way of using them up.

I spiralize, fry, steam, micro and grate.  I even have that book 'what shall I do with all these courgettes ' or something like.  Let's compile a thread with more ideas.

I expect there will be a tomato thread like this as well.

Why do we, myself included, always so diligently hide our true identity from any forum.  I can understand it if you happen to visit dodgy sites and want to remain totally anonymous but on a forum like ours where we are all above board and friendly (I hope) why do we guard or privacy so closely.  Im not wanting to upset anyone, just wondering.  By the way I'm Jenny, I answer to Jen, Mum or hey you!

Here's a couple of pictures of a new apple tree we were given as a present. Planted this year, keeps well watered and I took all the fruitlets/ flowers from it to keep its energy in getting established. Now on the younger leaves especially I've found this. There is also ant  activity around the leaves but we have loads of ants so I wasnt greatly surprised about that. Any idea who these fellas are and how to get rid if needs be?

Could be any climbing bean.

What do you do when they get to the top of your support frame and are there just waggling about? The frame is about 6' high and they are now about a foot above it. How high do you make your supports for them? They should be there till September/October as they are for drying and will get heavier and heavier (hopefully).

I've grown and harvested Elephant garlic this year and have about a dozen bulbils that have formed on the bottom. Are they best planted straight away (thinking a large pot?) and grown either indoors or outdoors?

Any advice appreciated.

A couple of weeks ago I found a strawberry over ripened and with fly eggs on it    . So not fancying eating it, I removed the eggs and took thin slices of outside flesh & seeds and planted them. 
It seems to of worked   . I have baby something growing in the pot, to soon to tell if it’s actually the strawberries.

This may be a little controversial. My none recommendation is The Vegetable & Herb Expert. Granted it’s not a new book some of it’s content and ideas are very dated. First published in 1998 and updated in 2001 (I have the updated version) My main reason for removing this from the bookshelf is it’s comments about Chillies (I’m very protective of my chillies). Some of which are blatant lies and if I’m not mistaken a touch of racism!!!!!

   

The other thing is it confused me. After looking through it yesterday trying to find an answer for someone’s tomato problem. Well see what you think. To be far this advice could be 100% correct, it would explain why I’m not very good at growing tomatoes. Get it wet , Don’t get it wet.......... make your mind up!

   

I’m sure a lot of what in this book is sound information. I was just surprised ( after not reading it for a very long time) at how dated some of it is.
