After looking through my books & the web. I couldn’t find it.

So I sent the photo here

https://www.royensoc.co.uk/identifying-insects

I got a response very quickly. It’s a parasitic tachinid fly, Tachina grossa.
If it’s parasitic does that mean he’s Bad News  Confused

They didn’t actually go into much detail but probably.
No picture unfortunately but a red kite was eyeing me up overhead this morning on my trip round the 'estate'. They were rare here until recently so such a joy to see one close up..
Love the red kites JJB. I was lucky enough to see one in west Wales when they were down to just a handful of breeding pairs. Thirty years on and Mum has them nesting at the bottom of her garden in suburban Reading. What a conservation success Smile

It would only be bad news for the insects it lives off. So likely good news for you.
I've only seen a red-kite once, last year. I was in the garden when a massive shadow went low over and made me duck. My wife sa it when she returned in the car. It was flying down the lane. Hopefully it liked what it saw and will be back.
We do have all the commoner birds of prey though: sparrowhawk, kestrel and buzzard with barn and tawny owls nesting near by.
Nearly missed this little fella. Dug himself very well inti the tunnel bed.

Great photo SC and great camouflage !!
This red admiral has had a very hard life. Still beautiful and able to fly.
