Hi Folks
I'm planting up some baskets tomorrow for Mrs B and wondered if I need to add anything to the store bought compost, say some bfb?

I stick some slow release organic fertiliser pellets into mine if I have any.

Does anyone think a layer/lining of comfrey leaves would be worth adding?

I guess so (to the chicken manure)!! Mine get a liquid feed once a week, too.

In the past I used slow release fertiliser, but I now mix in BFB when making up the compost, then after about six weeks I start giving a home made liquid feed, (comfry/banana, solution) at least once a week, but depending on how the plants look, this kep them going into October last year, as adding a layer of comfrey leaves, I don't know how that would do but if you don't try you will never know

I put comfrey leaves in half the planting holes for my tomatoes a few years ago, but don't recall any difference in the growth or cropping of the treated ones.

How about something for water retention? Some lumps of old sponge maybe?

As Jimny has suggested I have used bits of sponge mixed into the compost, I have also used wads of paper to hold the moisture, not sure if that worked as I had also installed a watering system which makes for an easier time
