Before I went to a new country I used to learn a few words like "No meat " or "without meat" which ever was easier to learn. I'd swatted up on Syrian food and, like many poorer countries, the locals eat a lot of pulses and vegetables - meat being for high days and holidays - so I thought eating would be easy for me. On our first night in Damascus, I practised my "no meat" words and the waiter seemed to understand and he brought us bowls of some sort of stew. I knew from the smell it had lamb in it but the waiter said, very proudly, that there was no meat in my bowl - they had taken the meat out for me! Things improved after that.
