Thanks Moth but I already have the previous chicken run gently decaying!!
Today, we removed the chicken wire floor. It wasn't as bad as I thought as the wire was in 2' wide strips and came up relatively easily. Also removed all the junk that was in there so its now an empty patch. Needs turning over before I sow/plant anything. I'm thinking of using it as an experimental patch this year - planting just a few peas, beans, courgettes, carrots, beetroot, salad leaves etc to see what can cope with the shade.
