2023 - What I did today

Did some mooching around the garden, nothing productive, more of a stocktake of what is still to crop and what needs clearing out. Pulled up a courgette and emptied the pot into the old pond. Not many more courgettes to come now, sadly. Collected some windfall apples.
I did plant a couple of stalks of lemon grass that had rooted in water and added it to my odds and ends corner in GH4 with the avocado & ginger plants. Tomorrow, I'll pot up some turmeric roots that have little buds on.

P chopped down a cherry tree then dug out the roots. He's very pleased with himself, he can now mow over a flat bit of lawn rather than have to go round a trunk. The cherry has very seldom fruited and if it did the birds had the cherries, it was a waste of space. That goes for most of the trees in the 'orchard'. He's got designs on a couple of apple trees but perhaps not this season.

Did a bit of weeding. We both did a bit of extra securing of the blow away. Bob drove more fencing stakes into the ground and tied it down some more and I sewed the door closed. And made sure everything else was secure as expecting 50+mph winds this evening. Now about to go out for lunch.

Hope P left the trunk in one piece. Good for turning. Still to little to mill, unfortunately.

Unfortunately we don't know anyone who turns wood these days. My dad used to have both wood and metal lathes and would make lovely stuff from blocks of Thai teak, but both dad, the lathes and the two workshops are long gone.  Sad

It must be a man thing, he said there a great deal of satisfaction at the 'timberrrr' stage, but was rather dismayed to find a second row of 2-3" roots below the first lot of 4" horizontal ones. He was grateful there wasn't a tap root. The reciprocating saw is a marvellous tool in this scenario.

Pulled out some blighted tomato plants, most are stil fine but a few had caught it.
Gave a quick trim to the cotoneaster.
Sowed sweet peas.
Saved some morning glory seeds.
Potted up a couple of Sungold tomato cuttings to overwinter again.
