Ferns make good foliage and fillers. I use Dryopteris a lot when I bring in flowers from the garden, nice tall stems. I have another that I can't remember the name of ATM but I put some in a vase of flowers in August, and it is now in a specimen vase on its own, still as fresh and green as when I first cut it.
