She could buy 100 pens, pass on the books and stamps.

I think the bit '(not all the same article)' means - probably not.

As you would have to buy some stamps, though, and 100 stamps would be only $5, then you have to buy 1,2,3 or $4 worth of stamps.

OK how about 19 books, a pen and 80 stamps?
Seems an odd combination, but it seems to add up.

Spotted this today:-

In recreational linguistics, a ‘charitable word’ is one that can give up any letter and still remain a meaningful word: SEAT — SEA. A ‘stingy word’ is one that doesn’t allow that, e.g. IMPETUOUS or PRY.

Can anyone make a sentence comprising all ""Charitable" words or all "Stingy" words?
Just a little something to do while you ponder what to do with the leftover turkey (not a clue).

Is a charitable word one that can give up one letter and still be a word, or a word that can give up any letter and still be a word? I'm confused! The original example you gave (SEAT) could be EAT, SAT, SET, SEA by giving up any letter, but most of the words in this sentence could only give up one specific letter. It's a lot easier to come up with words that can give up one letter, but I can't think of a single other word like SEAT that can give up any letter!

Okay, I came up with one, but only by using obscure words that you might find in a Scrabble dictionary! TREE, becomes REE, TEE, TRE (x2)
