Ready, Steady, Go..............
Peter and Mary run a 100 yard race and Peter beats Mary by 10 yards. They run again at the same speeds but now Peter begins 10 yards behind the starting line.
Who wins now?

(This post was last modified: 13-10-2021, 09:40 PM by Proserpina.)
Using illustrative numbers (highlight the blank spaces to see my working):
If Peter runs 100 yards in 100 seconds then he has taken 10 seconds for every 10 yards, and Mary must have run 90 yards in 100 seconds or 11.1 seconds for every 10 yards
Therefore Peter runs 110 yards in 110 seconds
Mary runs 100 yards in 100 + (100/9) = 111 seconds
So my answer is Peter would still win. Of course, my maths (or English comprehension) skills may be way off after a long day! However, there's not an easy way to gently hint at an answer that's one thing or the other, so I've done my best at a spoiler box!

Pros I'm more impressed at the spoiler box than the answer! That's magic, you are a clever one. Of course I had to look at the answer too so basically I cheated. I had a vague idea but couldn't put it into words.

Agreed pros, I did it in same way, just a factor of 10 out.

Can you complete the sequence of numbers replacing the question mark?
1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, ?

I work in geriatrics so Peter and Mary going at 1 yard per second means they are actually doing pretty well!

I'm tempted with 11, but that's just far to easy.

I think it's 11 too. Then I think it continues in increments of one but skips 30, 32, 34, 36, 40, and so on.
If I'm right, then all I can say is, 'Ee bah gum, that were a right hard one!'
