From the back of the cupboard!

Its raining so I've been exploring the back of the cupboard, looking for stuff that has lurked there for a while, usually food items that don't fit easily into my normal eating pattern (quick and easy). Things like dried beans that need to be soaked overnight or cooked for hours, unusual grains, flours, sauces and pickles. Or stuff I've been given that I wouldn't buy for myself but can't bear to throw away! So, I've decided to pick one (at least) item a day  and cook with it. 

Care to join me with your unexpected items?
Recipe ideas welcomed.

Today, its Spelt grains that came in a Hodmedod's mystery parcel (best before 31/3/21). They've been simmering for 45 minutes, after an initial soak for an hour. Not sure what I'll do with them next. Big Grin

Most of my prehistoric stuff in the cupboard is jars, pkts or tins. My bean store too is languishing in the spare room. I have some Polenta that looks at me every time I open the cupboard as if to say 'eat me for goodness sake', whilst it's good for sprinkling on potatoes fo roasting and in shortbread, I'm not sure what to do with a boiled up Polenta mush. I will join you in attempting to eat up the cupboard but not on a daily basis. After a day clearing,cleaning, bleaching of mould and steaming the crevices, with a view to nuking insects in the spare room, I'm looking forward to a bath, a ready meal and vegging out in front of the telly. I find I dont crawl around on the floor as easily as I used to, can't think why Smile.

My cupboard find this week was half a packet of red lentils, (bbe 2023). I  cooked them, froze half, and turned the rest into lentil hummus. All eaten now Big Grin

Never heard of it - but I did watch a couple of the episodes that followed your link! All the insects escaping from the trap door (Food for Thort) made me think of JJB. Big Grin

The Spelt grains are "interesting" Wink. Some of them popped their husk during cooking, the majority kept them. I've only eaten a few as I already had my evening meal sorted. I'll make something with them tomorrow - using them like wholegrain rice. It reminds me of chicken feed!

Polenta makes a lovely porridge which is more like a pudding if you add a bit of sugar and a bit of vanilla sugar Smile

I don't really have any 'back of the cupboard' items since we had a massive clear out before moving.. but I'll have a look and see if I can find things we don't often use and see if I can play along Big Grin

I ate some spelt with my dindins tonight. It was "OK" but I wouldn't buy any more. Some of the husks were a bit chewy and spoilt it, like when you eat peanuts and the pink skin stays on it and sticks to your teeth!

I'm sure there are some birds that will eat it. Missing the chickens now.
