Pruning apple trees

I have a few apple trees that I was pruning last week.most were OK to prune. These 2 though have produce a lot of long thinnish shoots. How would others go about pruning these 2?

A James Grieve that had very large apples this year.

   

And a lord Derby, not as bad.

   

I'd start with getting weights onto the branches that are pointing straight up. Once you have them weighed down so that you can more easily pick the apples, you will be able to make out which ones are overlapping and need to be pruned

I've just bought a Golden delicious and a Victoria plum at a supermarket, and all their branches are pointing upwards, so I'll get them planted up and fill up my water bottles to hang off them.

They are both spur bearers so I would be quite drastic taking the branches back, but it depends how you want you framework. Try not to take more than a third off though.

Thanks for the advice. The other trees just needed bit of time to trim them back but these look like they need good amount of last years growth taking out.
