Purple growth on tree

Anyone know what this stuff is, noticed it growing on the trunk and major branches of one of our trees.

What sort of tree is it?
Looks like a lichen - I never worry about those. Smile

It's a copper beech, my only concern was that I did notice last summer that some of the limbs hadn't leafed up so think they're dead. They're getting until next summer n if they don't come back I'll have them off the tree I think.

Just wondering if it could be a fungus that developed from a bird poo with elderberry or black currant traces in the poo ?
Coffee keeps me busy until it’s acceptable to drink whiskey.
