Potato leaf varieties

I know potato leaf varieties are capable of crossing with normal tomatoes. Do they self pollinate or do they need other tomatoes ?

Only ask as I have a potato leaf from my lucky dip collection. I planted it outside yesterday. As it was the only one out of the 170 that germinated and I can’t work out from my list of varieties which it is.  Just wondering if I isolated it somehow? So it didn’t cross with the other lucky dip plant. That it would still produce?

Any advice welcome.

Another good, reasonable question, that I have no idea the answer to. Sorry.

Tomatoes are self pollinating so don't need company.

Potato leaf tomatoes are self pollinating like the standard ones, but their "bits" are more exposed so they cross with other varieties more readily. Only a potential issue if you want to save seed.

Sorry I should have said. It is for potential seed saving. Depending what any of the mystery tomatoes turn out to be .

You could bag the plant when the flowers are open to stop cross pollination. You may never know what the plant is as identifying the fruit may be difficult, if not impossible. However, if its a good producer and you like the fruit it may be worthwhile.

If you're saving the seed, just bag a truss before the flowers open. I use organza bags with a drawstring and they cover the whole truss. Then tap the truss each day to dislodge the pollen.

Do you have a list of the seeds in your lucky dip? Maybe we could narrow it down to potato leaved varieties = like BrandyWine and Bloody Butcher.
Did they come from G&G seed swaps?
