I had to google that. I’m still not 100% sure what it’s used for. But I’m pretty sure it doesn’t make a great soup. Having absolutely no idea, I’m imagining something like wallpaper paste?  Big Grin  Huh .

Here's a link to sago pudding it looks more  like frog spawn than wall paper paste Big Grin

Sago, tapioca, semolina, in my memory they were all the same sloppy stuff. I only had school dinners for a week - refused to eat them. Awful stuff. Gray, lumpy mash, sloppy minced meat, custard with skin and those frogspawn afters. Yuk.

I loved them, they were like heaven compared to my Mam's cooking! Rolleyes I loved the custard skin and the rice pudding skin was to die for! Smile

Another memory, when I started work at sixteen and I was paying board I was always complaining to Mam that I was sick of cheese sandwiches fo bait  every day. My Dad took me to one side and said "Listen Son, stop giving your Mam grief about the sandwiches. Just do what I do and lop them over the fence at the park for the birds and go and buy youself something nice for dinner, like I do" Big Grin

I quite liked school dinners, all except solid peas. We used to get told off for using them as ammunition. You're right Vinnie, the skin off the custard and rice pudding is the best bit. In later years it was sandwiches. I used to go through phases of wanting the same sandwich every day. Mum must have been pleased, it made school lunches that bit easier. My brother would eat nothing but cheese sarnies and apples, I would insist on raspberry jam. Another phase was sliced tomato with lashings of black pepper. Not that interested in raspberry jam these days but sliced tomato with freshly ground black pepper is lovely. Nan used to like black pepper on strawberries!

Strange that, I used to love tomato sandwiches with lashings of black pepper. I thought it was only me being 'strange'  Rolleyes

I worked with someone who used to have treacle and banana sandwiches for thieir bait. When I asked why he said "The treacle glues the banana in and stops it fom shooting out the side of the sandwich" Big Grin

Ahhh, but is that treacle (black) or golden syrup?. Condensed milk (Nestlé 's) works the same but tastes better.

In a similar vein, ever had  a sugar sandwich?  Fresh white doorsteps with lashings of butter, sprinkled with sugar.  Yummy.

We kids used to have sugar sandwiches - possibly a hangover from when sweets were on ration.
