Traffic Lights and Zones

Yes Folks, Its time for a new, cunning Plan.
I've put all the vegetables that I could grow into Traffic Light categories - Green Light are my favourites, the ones I really, really want to grow, Amber Light means it would be good to grow but not as my first choice. Red Light veg are ones I've struggle to grow and don't really enjoy - or, can be bought fresh cheaply.

For example:-
GREEN Light veg include Tomatoes, cucumber, courgettes, beans, mangetout, salad leaves, beetroot & carrot, chard.
AMBER Light veg include leeks, onions, radish, broad beans, spinach, kale.
RED Light veg are parsnip, swede, turnip. kohl rabi, aubergine, peppers, celery, celeriac, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts, sweetcorn.

What about the Zones, I hear you ask?

ZONE 1 is the Best growing area - sunny, fertile, close to water and to home. Its the easiest to maintain because its convenient to pop into! Basically, its the GHs and pots on the Patio and the old Chicken Run.
ZONE 2 are the Veg Plots at the far end of the garden - BUT not all of them, only those that have been kept clear, or have usable structures like bean frames
ZONE 3 are the Veg Plots that need some TLC and the rest of the garden.

Now it doesn't take a Giant Leap to see that GREEN Light veg should be grown in Zone 1, AMBER veg in Zone 2, and RED Light veg seeds should be chucked out, swapped or randomly scattered.

If you've followed this so far, to put this Plan into place for next year, I need to concentrate my efforts and resources on ZONE 1. This area will have the best compost and fertiliser over winter. Will be weeded thoroughly. The GHs will be cleared in rotation and the soil in the pots will be used as mulch in ZONE 2. Fresh compost will be sourced for the GHs.
ZONE 2 will be weeded, mulched and, unused areas covered over winter, ready for spring.
Zone 3 will probably return to nature or be planted with perennial shrubs and flowers.

For once, I can see the logic in one of your random plans. It even sounds doable (apart from the bit about chucking out seeds). You're in the questionably enviable position of having a choice of growing areas, so the plan sounds a good 'un.

The categorisation is basically what every gardener does instinctively, probably - grow what you like, don't grow what you don't like. Over the years I'm sure we've all whittled down our 'regulars' to fit the space we have. Looking back at 20yrs old very vague records. It was amazing what I crammed into the plots, artichokes, potatoes, cabbage, etc. None of which I grow today.

Like you I stick to toms, cucs, courgettes, beans, beetroot, chard & MT, with the addition of sweetcorn, carrots and broccoli. If I want to experiment, one of those have to be forfeited, which isn't going to happen. Each year, these days, is a replica of the last. I'm a creature of habit.

You "think" I have a choice of growing areas but, in practice most of the garden is unsuitable for growing annual vegetables because its too shaded by the trees. There are 3 oak trees with trunks too big to hug, plus ash trees in my garden and the neighbours. Also, lots of fruit trees so the middle of the garden is no use for growing anything that needs sunlight. Even the Far end (Veg Plot) of the garden is in the shade during the day so not the best of spots.
You have to grow with what you have!
