2025 - What I did today

Planted a few Lady Di Runner beans - poor germination for beans this year.
Turned back a piece of pond liner that I was using to suppress weeds, so that I could plant some squashes. The weeds had gone but there were 2 big animal holes and a couple of ant nests with lots of eggs. I've left it exposed in the hope that the birds will eat them.
Did some weeding and chop and dropping.
Emptied a potato pot. I'll refresh the compost in it and plant it up with summat - maybe melons.

Indoor stuff reinstating curtains and blinds in living room. New carpet coming Monday.
Planted out 2 Orangeto toms in tubs on patio. The poorly snapped cucumber is still strong and not wilting. My first aid seems to be working.

I've planted out the hollyhocks, and may try sowing some more direct. They'll look great at the back of the bed.

I've also direct sown sweetcorn, an F1 variety I found, it might do nothing. In between the tomatoes and the perennial broccoli, I've direct sown radishes - a whole packet. I have hundreds!

I'm also taking a huge chance on aubergines out in the veg bed. I know they love the heat, and it's not quite warm enough here yet, but it's in a sheltered position, and near the pond, so I hope they'll at least survive. I've never ever had an actual fruit from an aubergine plant though, so I'm not expecting much!

I'm feeling a bit better today, but the rain is threatening, so I'm taking a break, whilst applying for a high-end job. My current job is very physical, and short, but many shifts, which isn't working out very economical with the price of fuel and living half an hour away from work. I'm still a bit torn whether I want a more strategic job, nor if they'll allow part time work, but I won't know if I don't apply!

Put a grow frame up for tromboncino. Tied in tomatoes and removed armpits. Planted outside 2 squash. That’s everything planted for the season now. Apart from repeat salad .
Builder that would like to go play in the garden.

Donned some gloves & decided to pull a few nettles out from my border at home. Yeah, right!!! Two hours later I had seperate piles of nettles, brambles and an elderberry bush which had sneaked into bordeer, all piled up on the lawn. The gloves I had were useless, but eventually carted away the various piles to the top of the garden!
I also pulled out a load of Old mans Baccy (cant remember its proper name?), mainly to stop it spreading its seeds all over the garden

Went to the allotment with my youngest. We did some watering, collected roses and daisies, and harvested some fruits: cherries, strawberries, red currants, and raspberries (oops, and mangetout). Not many of any of them, but it's so nice to be harvesting. The cherries are mostly from the big trees at the back. I've never given them a look before because the birds usually strip them without me noticing. I think they're a yellow/red cherry. Tasted nice enough. Also a grand total of one from my dwarf tree purchased a few years back. Looked beautiful but tasted of not much at all.

Planted  lots of cucurbits - yellow scallops, patty pan, random courgettes, 4 Tromboncino outdoors. Ground very dry and hard but rain forecast tonight so I'm hoping they'll have a drink.
Also planted 4 Passandra cucumbers in GH2.
Mulched the spuds and mangetout with grass cuttings. Filled a dustbin and a couple of trugs with grass ready to top up the hotbin and wormeries.
Did some pruning on one of the apple trees, thinned out the small apples - can't reach most of them so hoping that the June Drop will do those for me.  I was given this unnamed tree by a friend who worked at Wyevale nurseries about 45 years ago. When we moved to our current house I dug up the tree and brought it with me. It was the first fruit tree I planted here. In all the years, I have never seen this many apples on it!
