We went to Nova Scotia for a holiday to visit my husband's elderly cousin. She met us at the airport and we stopped off at a little cafe for a meal before reaching her house. Seeing the menu we (OH and I) both ordered Root Beer as we'd never tried it. Cousin said we couldn't have that because it was alcoholic and she didn't approve of strong drink! It seemed rude to argue with her, having only just met her, so we had lemonade instead.
We said Grace before we ate anything. She was lovely, but it was a strain being on our best behaviour all the time!! We were on a self drive holiday around Nova Scotia so, when the day came to pick up our car and head off it was with a bit sigh of relief and a root beer at the first stop.

Root beer was OK. I drank it more than once so it can't have been that bad. Bit like Dandelion & Burdock IIRC.

My father used to talk about Bloaters and, until now, I've never wondered what they were - and I've no idea whether he ever ate them! They sound disgusting - and a pair of bloaters sound rather rude.
According to wikipedia :- Bloaters, bucklings, and kippers
All three are types of smoked herring. Bloaters are cold-smoked whole; bucklings are hot-smoked whole; kippers are split, gutted and then cold-smoked.
So kippers are the only ones that are gutted before smoking.
That's another thing I've learnt today.

That's another thing I've learnt today. I used to have bloaters in the fish mongers. They were never as popular as kippers. I used to try everything that I sold at least once. But I never tried them. The name is off putting enough and them being whole definitely didn’t appeal.

That's another thing I've learnt . I learnt something too. The insult of being called a bloater was implying you were 'two-faced with no guts' but it's obvious from your research that bloaters do have guts. Either way I never liked the look of bloaters, they have eyes. It took me until adulthood to eat whitebait fritters because the eyes would peep out at me. Nowadays you don't see them very often in restaurants and I'm not about to stink the house out frying fishy stuff at home.

So many fragrant flowers beginning with L. I'm going with Lilly of the Valley. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with LoV, grandma (we called her Abby, the reason why is another long drawn out story as her name was Enid) anyway I digress, grandma had a perfume atomiser with LoV smell and as a treat, when I was little, she would let me have a spritz. Like lavender and lilac these fragrances are indicative of yesteryear and remind us of our oldies. The hate side of LoV is it spreads every where and is a devil to get rid of.

L for Lemon and Lime
So fresh, bright, clean and energising.
In Tasmania, on the apple orchard, there was a lemon tree outside the kitchen window and I could lean out and pick one. I lived on stewed apple (with lemon juice of course) for the 6 months or so that I worked there. Happy memories.
I can't help wondering why we can't grow lemons outdoors here because the temperature is not that different to Tasmania. My only attempt was a failure - sadly.
"Lemon tree very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet, but the fruit or the poor lemon is impossible to eat!"..............just a little earworm for you today.

An earworm for sure, I had to Google who sung it as I couldn't remember. Trini Lopez. Takes me back. Also Peter Paul & Mary, saw them live long ago in NZ as a kid. I'm not sure which version I remember.
