Growing Leek stumps

Never throw a leek stump away! If the base is intact, with roots, cut off the bottom inch or so and replant.
No base, no roots - no worry!! Shop bought leeks are often trimmed - as are the ones I get FREE! Trim off the bottom inch or so and put it in a little water, not too much or the leek will rot. Here are some I prepared earlier - about 3 days ago!

    In their little pots.
The green bit in the middle shows it wants to grow!

I'll give them a few more days in their pots to let the roots grow more, then plant them in my permanent leek bed - where all rejuvenated leeks live. They usually produce side leeks.  Some I cut off and use, leaving the stumps in situ, the rest are left to flower and self seed.

Very ingenious Veggy! Cool I am reminded of showleek growers whose leeks were later auctioned after show. Apparently ,and I may be wrong, a hot knitting needle was pushed up from the bottom before auction to stop anyone from growing the plant on and  getting precious seed pips, pods or 'grass' from a winning strain? Don't know whether it would work or not though? Rolleyes

Ingenious, now that is an idea of yours I might just give a try. I've a small pot of last year's Leek seedling that never got planted out. I think if I planted them now they'd all bolt. What does the panel think?

Bung 'em in! If they bolt it doesn't matter.

Incidentally, you can do this with spring onions too.
