2023 - What I sowed today

Sowed (planted) onion sets Stuttgarter and Centurion. Chose those varieties because they were cheap in Home Bargains

I'm resisting sowing any cucurbits yet, long with beans, I fear the frost. Supposed to be going into minus figures briefly then warm again. Usually our last frost is end April. Not sure I can resist that long

Oh I know it's early, but the melons had to go in now so I thought I'd try one each of a cucumber and a courgette just to see how they do since there was room in the propagator. I'll be sowing my main ones in late April as usual.

Today I sowed a free packet of Aquilegia "Chocolate Soldier".

Looked them up - really nice and a bit different

Over the weekend I sowed my first early potatoes type Solist I also pricked out and potted 32 tomato plants.

What do you all use to mark your outdoor sowings? Last year, I mostly used little markers made from old yoghurt pots and similar, but my garden is quite exposed and the wind moved them around. I have some slate markers, but it's hard to write on them clearly, the chalk washes away quite quickly, and they snap very easily. I'm currently marking the corners of blocks where I've sown things using twigs, but as I get to the point where most areas have sowings, that's going to become less clear. Even now, it doesn't tell me what is sown in which block. Maybe I should draw a garden plan and mark sowings on there? But I can't do it outside in the wind and I may have forgotten where I sowed things by the time I get inside!

You won't be surprised to hear that I don't mark where I've sown things. I sometimes use bits of stick to delineate sown area from unsown. Once there's germination I move the sticks. I do write in a diary what has been sown where (roughly).
