Toasted marmite and cheese would have had a better response.

Noo, I don't think so. It's all just so wrong.

A snide(fake) North Face jacket for instance.

Thanks, Vinny. We speak a different language "Snide" is nasty, sly remark, comment down here.
Going back to Marmite - I've bought the Morries one as its cheaper. Tastes much the same as the real thing, perhaps a little less bitey.

The Sainsbury's own brand version is fine, it's probably all made in the same factory and the recipe can't differ that much. They set them up to hate the stuff in that video, can't imagine I'd much enjoy a load of it smeared onto fresh bread either. Where it shines is in smaller amounts, bringing out flavours of other foods.

Marmite needs butter, in my view, whether its on fresh bread or toast.

Did I imagine this or have I a memory of toast, marge & marmite soldiers to dip into a boiled egg yolk when I was a nipper?

I always have Marmite on my toast when I have poached eggs.
Veggie you need butter to block up those holes in bread otherwise you end up spreading to much Marmite.
