I planted a load of crocus under some apple trees one year. The next morning, nearly every one had been dug up and I assume eaten by badgers. It was a devil of a job mowing for a bit after that.

Could of been grey squirrels. My friend has stopped planting bulbs because they just dig them up. Which is very annoying, I was going to give her some bulbs for Christmas.

Squirrels dig up lots here too! Such a pain.

^^^ they've built a drey in our large copper beech, little b*****rs are just vermin. At least her nextdoor has stopped feeding them peanuts, she can no longer get out in the garden poor woman.
