I found a ladybird in the garden today - she was just sitting on shrubby plant and, after thinking that she shouldn't be out this late, I realised that I had no idea what happened to ladybirds in winter.
The Duckduck told me that they hibernate and how to make them a hotel to overwinter in............so this is my job for tomorrow! I hope she's still there so I can move her into her new home!

That so simple I like it.
I want to see photos of your hotel in place.

Nice, in a similar way when old garden canes have come to the end of their useful life I cut them in to shorter lengths, tie them in bundles with twine and shove em in to bushes or behind sheds etc around the garden as insect hotels.

Simple but effective. Nowt to stop you bunging a few bits of cane in as well.

I didn't make it yesterday because the only plastic bottle I had was full of saved tap water for the Chooks. So I topped up their water and left the bottle to dry out inside. Maybe today! The ladybird is still on her leaf but I'm a bit worried she may be the "wrong sort" of ladybird. They're so hard to identify.

I'm worried it may be a Harlequin which is very variable apparently. Mine's Red with lots of black spots. http://uksafari.com/ladybirds.htm

I never did make a ladybird hotel! However, today I found a proper red and black ladybird on the door handle - obviously wanted to come indoors so I moved her into the GH where she'll find lots of hiding places and food. Do they eat white fly?? the Duck says YES.

Just seen a post on a local FB group saying that there are swarms of ladybirds around - invading their house, on the washing etc. I feel left out now with only one lonely ladybird.
