Do you have any family rituals beyond the usual?
For as many years as I can remember I have always read The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper over the Christmas period. It is a fantasy novel rooted in Arthurian legend but can (should?) be read in real time starting on Midwinter's Eve.
Growing up, my Dad read The Father Christmas Letters by JRR Tolkien to us every Christmas Eve.

I haven't read either of those, PP, but I'll look out for them now.

I always read "The Night Before Christmas" to mine, I have handed the baton over now to them, for theirs.

We have three family birthdays in the week before Christmas (father's, brother's, and mine). We would usually put the Christmas tree up on my Dad's birthday and then we would all open presents under the tree on our birthdays as well as on Christmas Day. For us, it was a week of celebrations and good food rather than just the day itself.
I guess it all got a bit much as I grew up though. I haven't bothered with my birthday for a good 18 years now and am not really interested in Christmas either. I think I'm quite looking forward to having four days to catch up with some sleep this year!

We,including four families have played cards on boxing day for the last 20 years or so. Unfortunately this won't be happening this year so I will have to get rid of my sweetie jar full of small change another way.
Always watch one variant of A Christmas Carol every year. My favourite Scrooge was Alistair Simms.
