2026 - What I did today.

Sorry, P. Not a nice thing at all. My most recent fall down the stairs was with my daughter on my back... Only a step but not a good feeling.

Today I finally got fed up with the little compost gnats and chucked my tomatoes outside. Pumpkin babies can stay indoors but tomatoes are chancing it in the blowaway.

Started shifting pots around to see how the raised beds are going to look aka how domineering. Potted on literally dozens of strawflowers. Bought a hydrangea from L*dl. Will probably ill-advisedly finally buy more flower seed.

Achieved very little today in the garden. I was literally just walking out the gate with the wheelbarrow to carry on digging daffodils. When I got a request asking for help at the cafe.

More pot shuffling in the GHs, which leads to compost sieving and pot refilling.

Yesterday I was fishing with my eldest son in the morning then, when archery was cancelled in afternoon I made the most of the free time by clearing the wood pile from the front and stacking it at the back of the house. I reckon I have enough stored logs to last me to the autumn now?

Boot camp and boxing this morning then Morrisons for 20% off meat. On my way home I will call at allotment (weather permitting) and crack on there for a couple of hours and see what I can get done?

Yesterday was a lot of tomato shuffling. I've potted on one of each variety for my own use, then its deciding which ones to pot on for the two lots of giveaways, then looking at the remainder and deciding whether to bother to pot on or not for use outside. I wish I was more organised, I spend a lot of time hunting for particular toms, feared lost, in amongst the tom forest.

P is on the final stages of the summerhouse wall and water butts, he thanks you all for the sympathy, it's not something he's used to . He's on a deadline, rain due by 1pm.

Did some potting on. Spent most of the day helping my husband, digging along the fence in the back garden behind the shrubs to bury my rat mesh. Felt very productive while in progress but now feels very precarious and silly considering they can dig in other places. I have more mesh but that will be for wasting for weekends.

Work followed by different work. Followed by a tiny bit of weeding while walking round the garden looking for bugs to photograph.

The usual - at the moment. Locating big pots. taking out the exhausted plants and replanting them or chucking them in any empty spot in the jungle. Then sieving the compost, chucking in some chicken manure pellets, lining the bottom of the pot with wool insulation and refilling the pot ready for planting. After sieving the old compost, the roots are added to the hotbin, stones go on the path and any chunky bits of compost are chucked on top of the insulation.
I've done this so often recently that I have it down to a fine art. Sieving through a plastic "spring onion" crate is very satisfying. When you shake it around the fine roots tangle together to make a little furry critter!
Its the little things that keep me happy.
