I might have to empty it out again Veggie, as I am not getting any increase in temperature, I could be cutting the grass shortly so might wait till I do that, then I can add the grass as I build it up and hopefully that could kick it off, I have covered the top just now to try and hold any heat in, but deffinatly don't need to fit a vent as there are several places where any steam can get out, I can seal those areas off with some polystyrene and tape if required

I think the compost is starting to heat up, but as an insurance I have prepared a mix of water, Guinness (its been sitting in the garage since 2015)and some old meringue shells, to make a yeast solution, not 100% sure it will work but beats just throwing it all away

Its normally just a container of hot water - not a hot drink.

Well the hot drink seems to have worked as the compost is heating up, not sure how hot it is but a fair bit of moisture round the top when I open it up

I think it goes in a separate bin if you're planning to use the compost on edibles. Its OK for ornamentals though.

That’s very interesting. I wonder why lion poo is ok in a cold compost and your domestic cat isn’t? Because I can 100% guarantee lions eat quite a lot of red meat .
It’s good I can compost the dogs and (I’m guessing) ferrets poo. I really must try to find the time to finish building my hot bin anyone would think I’m busy or something .

I took some compost from the bottom of the hotbin this morning. - 3 x 30litre tubs to be exact. Its a bit rough and wet so I'll let it dry out then sieve out the best bits!........or should that be the worst bits?
Anyway, I thought you might like to know that Avocado peel does NOT breakdown in the compost - it still looks like bits of leather. Found several avocado pits too which I'll put aside to check for signs of germination.
