I think this is why I have such good success with germinating in coir, it retains moisture very well so I don't usually water it again after sowing until seeds have popped up. Coir also stays very loose and doesn't form a hard cap on the surface. I see a lot of professional peat-free seed composts contain a wetting agent to stop them drying out so quickly.
