Hello all. I'm back in Grimsby this weekend, supposedly packing, but haven't been very productive so far. I got back after midnight last night and it's a bit warm for anything vigorous (Alexa insists it is only 19 degrees here, but it feels a lot hotter than that). I've just been out and done some tidying in the garden, but had to retreat indoors again with the job only part done.
I'm being moved into a different flat at the accommodation (just offered it when I went to sign my tenancy agreement, I hadn't complained), but haven't seen it yet. It's on the first floor which is much better from a security/personal safety point of view and I've been told it's a bigger room and "nice and light". I think it would be very bad luck to get another blocked sink, so that will be better. It also gets me away from the singing flatmate (who also talks constantly to herself, and set off the fire alarm for the whole building Thursday night), though that might be out of the frying pan and into the fire if the new flatmates are worse! I've been researching mobile broadband and it looks like my mobile network has a big poor signal area right where my hospital is. I think a mobile broadband connector on another network will allow me to stream/download like normal - it will be very expensive (£35/month), but will definitely be worth it if it works! I've also been told it should be fine to have a kettle in my room, so will probably try and get a small quiet travel kettle.
I'm hoping to go back with some bedding of my own, a toothbrush holder, some cleaning things, a cup (I took a bowl to make my cold-soak couscous in, but didn't think to take anything to drink out of!), some Command hooks and a few other things. I'll also look out for anything that might be useful while I'm packing, and can keep those things to one side.
I've spent eight years in total as a student (across two degrees), and spent large portions of my time as a medical student staying in hospital accommodation but can only think of one as bad as this. However, I'm really trying to be positive - at least I have a job, no financial worries, and a roof over my head! Thank you to all of you for your suggestions and commiserations. Sadly I can't paint the room, but I will ask if I can put my own curtains up as they, and my own bedding, will immediately make the place look nicer. I do think cress and sprouting seeds will be a good option for growing as they don't really need much light at all (and I have jars for sprouting seeds already). I haven't done well with orchids before, but might be more focused in tending to one when I don't also have fifty containers outdoors to look after!
