As you know, we used to have bees too. Loved having them in the garden.
My husband, being brought up on Winnie the Pooh, was determined to have his own "hunny" whilst I wanted chickens so when we were both made redundant (happy days) we decided to go for it. The bees were never a problem although we didn't let the dogs near the hive entrance. Also the hives were nowhere near the washing line (bees poo when they leave the hive and you don't want that on your clean clothes!).
Bob or you could easily make the hives and stands. We wore zipup front white overalls, tucked into wellies (cheaper than a complete bee suit). I had a veil that fitted over a solar topee (which I had!). He had one that had a mesh front and bits that went under your arms to keep it in place, inside the overalls. Elbow length gloves.
I can already see honey and wax candles on your sales barrow.
