I followed your example and sorted the kitchen store cupboard and found a tin of black treacle from the '90's. Several other tins of out of date. stuff I fed to P, and he's still breathing, I haven't managed to kill him off yet, but I'm still trying. 
That's as far as my decluttering went. The wardrobe beckons, but that's not going to happen quickly. Why is it if you throw something away you need it next week?
