That reminds me of another food memory from my childhood. On occasion when out shopping we’d go to the bakery to choose what cake we wanted for 11’s when we got home. I would always have the same thing. A soft bread roll. And I would get to eat it while we carried on walking round town. Normally heading back to the car at this point. Nan was always a little embarrassed, wondering what people thought when they saw a small child eating a plain bread roll out of a paper bag. I didn’t care, I loved them. Much better than cakes. I do still from time to time eat bread with nothing on it. Unfortunately I do like cake now also.

I never fancied sugar or condensed milk sandwiches instead my favourite used to be apple and cold baked bean sandwiches.

Nothing wrong with that. I used to pick at the new loaf while mum was shopping, much to her annoyance. I was a teenager at the time so should have known better.

I can't like that, disgusting, along with anything else salt & vinegar. Salt's ok, vinegar not so much.

My Mum worked in the local "Wonderloaf" bakery on Saturday morning, putting up the orders for the delivery van drivers. She'd stagger home carrying a huge tray/bag of bread and cakes. Sometimes, we go to meet her and help carry the bags home. The neighbours used to look out for her as she'd always give them something from her collection.
There'd be chocolate eclairs for my Dad and, my favourite, fruity buns. I still like Hot Cross buns!
Once, we were going on holiday to Cornwall and got stuck in a traffic jam. One of those holdups where people get out of their cars and start chatting to their neighbours. Mum, always prepared, had a huge bag of fruity buns which she handed out to anyone who came up to chat!

I think I have mentioned this before? that Helen used to work in a cake shop. I remember they had a row of biscuit tins at the front of the counter, each one had a different type of biscuit in them and they wee sold by the pound! The very end one was a broken biscuit mix which wree a lot cheaper. She said pensioners would come in to buy the cheaper boken biscuits. Many a time the brroken biscuit tin was empty so if a pensioner came in and was dismayed, Helen used to go along the tins taking a few biscuts fom each then bashing them up a bit for them! She sold a lot of broken biscuits! Big Grin

They sell them in packets in B&M - for about the same price as a packet of intact biscuits!  Huh
