What's flying near you?

A few days ago I found a very young long tailed tit in the fruit cage. Before I could discover which particular hole it had got in by, it had fluttered around a bit then popped its head through the soft mesh roof and flew away. This morning, doing the rounds to check nothing was in the cages, furry or feathered, I noticed a flock of long tails in the trees and several 'strap hanging' youngsters outside on the fruit cage net. I walked up to politely tell them not to attempt to go in, I didn't want to frighten them too much. No chance of that. I had quite a long conversation with at least two, face to face and with much twittering. They gave up eventually when the troupe of at least 15 decided to decamp, but I don't think they listened to a word I said, they were too busy gossiping.

I traipsed up to the gh in my nightie, for the morning forage and on my return to the house I heard a big fluttering. I thought nothing of it, assuming it was a robin escaping fom the feeding station by our bedroom window. I trundled indoors ready to pop back into bed with a coffee and found the fluttering was now inside.

   

A great tit must have been investigating the window when I frightened him into the bedroom.  He wasn't too frantic, so we opened the windows and left him to find his way out.
That'll be an adventure to tell his grandkids.

I have come up with a rather unique way of feeding the small birds instead of th3 jackdaws magpies and crows hijacking the feeders in the apple tree.
I bought a secondhand dog crate for a medium size dog, and I hang 2 fat ball feeders and 2 wild bird seed feeders inside it. The crate sits on the ground and the birds pop in and out of it, I put mealworms on the floor for Robinson’s ground feeding, so far they are all loving it and the jackdaws especially parade around it looking in and pecking at what food is on the floor near the side bars.

That's a good solution Can. Keeps squirrels out too. Our robin feeder is based on the same principle, but much more rustic.  Two concentric rolls of 2" plastic mesh with a dustbin lid tied on top. For 'rustic' read 'bodged"
