Apparently, frogs tend to return to the area where they were spawned. Clever little things - having a tadpole memory!

The wonders of nature! Cool Dunno how big a frogs brain is, but I think they were round with the dinosaurs? so it has served them well! Big Grin

PS Just checked they were actually around BEFORE the dinosaurs!

What if it were the same race of frogs going back to the same pond since before the dinosaurs??? Sounds like the start of a sci-fi book!

There's another clump of frog spawn today, not in the water but on the edge of the pond in the mud. The second clump is larger too.
Hope they hatch before the pond dries up!

Off on a tangent here but I've been reading a book by Derek Gow  who has been reintroducing species that used to live in the UK - like the beaver. One of his projects was the White Stork. Apparently a newly hatched stork will regard the place where it hatches as home and return to it annually. So it would be no good to import some storks from another country because they'd just fly home again.  They had to breed them in the UK for them to stay in the UK.
I bet storks like eating tadpoles and frogs too.

The pond filled up with water last night so the little taddies are free ranging now. Hope we don't have a dry spell for a few weeks.

I found my first frog spawn of the year today. In the little burn at the front of our garden. Very exciting.
Builder that would like to go play in the garden.
