Enigma and Nimrod are (were) the chooks we're tending. Enigma, we were told has been poorly for a year and at the stage we took over she was immobile and in a sorry state, she stayed in the coop all day almost comatose. I think anyone else might have dispatched her, but I couldn't have done it. We were given instructions on what to do if she pegged it while the owners were away. They are only away for 2 batches of a couple of days each, so why Enigma had to die on my watch is perplexing. We gave her a proper burial, marked her grave and Nimod was in the congregation very interested in our digging. She doesn't seem bothered by being alone and greeted us warmly this morning.
That explains your earlier comment about looking after a "single chicken". I thought she was an Only. I was worried it was a fox or something unexpected.
Have to admit that my RIP chickens go in the household waste bin for incineration.

Today I made and ate my 'surf & turf?' dinner and while it was cooking it I also made a single jar of gooseberry and blackberry jam. Now I intend watering all my outdoor potted plants and shrubs/trees as they are starting to wilt! I then need to take all my washed clean clothes upstairs so I have room to sit on my couch!
If I can be bothered after that I may make a start on my coal forge project seeing as I have all the parts required but just need to make some items then put them together. I've only been on with it for seven years!

I potted on my unknown chilli / sweet pepper.
Potted on the clematis, one of the new plants my friend brought me.
Sampled my first straight from the plant daylily petal. Very nice it was too.
Wanted to pick blackberries from the back hedge but there were so many nettles amongst them, that I ended up pulling up nettles and cutting out the unwanted bramble runners. Managed to work my way back far enough to see Ashley again, he's Arthur's cousin.

The last morning of chicken watch. I shall be sad not to be having long chooky conversations. Nimrod found some blackberries, she told me she's very fond of blackberries, better than the damsons, blackberries go down in one, damsons you have to work at to much. Now you lot with chickens are going to tell me that blackberries kill chickens, aren't you if not I know where to send all my spare blackberries.
