The garden from scratch

More sacrificial planting on the bank today. Some wallflowers (they really weren’t enjoying being in a pot), some marjoram ( planted quite low down on the bank so hopefully nothing can reach it . I had to lay flat on the bank to reach for planting. Must of looked very odd to people driving past ). Also some foxgloves ( purple & yellow apparently, no variety on packet). I’m hoping these will do ok because the native ones are left alone. 
All the yellowish leaves are the new foxgloves. I’d like to say that was because they’re a different variety. I think it has more to do with the cr@p homemade compost I’m using. 

   

I’ve made the executive decision that one of the hedges around the cottage garden will be physocarpus .
It’ll go from the main gate to the rose arch. Along the edge of the drive.
I just really like it. With its red leaves and pale pink/ cream flower clusters and is deep pink seed pods.

I’ve a big physocarpus in the garden. I made my executive decision yesterday after walking round the garden and noticing (again) how pretty the seed heads were. It grows very easily from cuttings. I potted on 7 yesterday into 3lt pots.   . After a little research the best time to prune is after flowering to encourage more or winter to keep its shape. This is also a reason for choosing it. As it’ll be next to the drive it’ll need to be kept in check. I had to research that because the big one in the garden has never been pruned    But it’s a lovely shape. Definitely didn’t want something that if you pruned at the wrong time or took off the wrong bits it wouldn’t flower the following year.

That does look nice! I'm almost tempted to grow one myself now.

I’ll start some cuttings off for you and send once they’ve rooted.

That's a lovely shrub - I love the colour of the foliage and the flowers are so pretty! Even the berries look like something straight out of a fairytale!

Last photo is of the not yet finished drainage ditch around it. Which will eventually be filled with gavel. And it had started raining when I took the 3rd photo.

This is just one of the smaller beds.

Bob has been doing more fencing today so hopefully very soon I’ll be able to plant my first bed up   .
