It's called Achenbach Syndrome (or 'paroxysmal finger haematoma' if you dislike eponymous syndromes as much as I do). It's very common, especially in women (I've seen figures that suggest more than 10% of women will experience it at some point). It's supposed to be more common in people over 40, but I've had several episodes since I was in my early twenties.
Um, have a disclaimer that this is just general knowledge and doesn't constitute medical advice for which the GMC would expect me to post my full name and GMC number!

It’s nice to put a name to my freaky fingers. I’ll not hold you to anything Proserpina . I wasn’t expecting any medicine advice from a gardening forum , but I really do appreciate it. Just want to see how many fellow weirdos were here.
now I’ll get Bob to tell me how to pronounce those big words .

Twice in less than a week! On the same finger!
Finger to swollen to straighten at moment . It’d probably be more noticeable if I’d washed my hands before I took the photo . It’s always hurt & gone a bit black in the past, but don’t recall them swelling up quite so much. These last 2 bursting veins have really put some effort into it .
