2022 - What I did today

My saved Charlotte potatoes are resolutely refusing to sprout.
So I emptied the two tubs I planted over a month ago - they hadn't sprouted either - and re-planted with a couple of Nicola tubers in each, from Wilco's. These had already grown some decent chits.

I've re-united the unearthed ones with their cousins, just in case they wake up in the next few weeks. But I will probably have to buy fresh.

I've been on nights all week so haven't been able to function to do anything else. However, got my seed module parcel when I got home this morning, so that was exciting. I got trays in three different module sizes. They are nice and sturdy and look like they'll last a good decade or more. I actually wish I'd bought a few more in the larger sizes as I think the Charles Dowding ones will be great for starting lots of things all at once, but the bigger trays will be better for the times when I don't quite get round to potting things on or planting them out! I have lots of germinated onion seeds now, so it will be good to get those into modules this weekend - a great opportunity to test them out!

Last year I grew onions from seed for the first time in a while. They were sown 10th Jan, germinated 18th and planted straight into the great outdoors mid March. I remember thinking they looked quite vulnerable  but they gave a bumper crop of large onions.

have you got any pics?/were the trays worth the money? What sizes did you get? I really want some decent ones.

Here's the ones I bought, and I agree with Pros, they feel like they will last forever. You can't twist them at all really, they're very solid.

Today we had planned to empty the pond and for two people to come and collect the fish. I put up a water tight container next to the pond, pulled up the water outlets out of the ground (two thick pipes) and popped them into the container to drain in there instead.
I then got a hosepipe and split it into two, stuck them into the container too, and started sucking out the air and for a long time I couldn't get it to start pushing the water through. Meanwhile the heavens opened. And my nasal cavities have been well rinsed with pond water now - lovely. Once the pipes got going, we started using buckets to empty the pond while we could still reach, cause it was getting close to mid day and I worry we won't be able to empty the pond enough. However, thankfully the two people don't want to come out in the rain, it seems like, so I will empty the pond a bit more, then stick the water outlets back into the pond so the fish will be ok in there until tomorrow.

I can post some pictures of the three types I've got in a few days when I can connect my phone to a WiFi signal again. The trays aren't cheap compared with the flimsy ones (around £5.50 per tray, plus £8.99 postage for the whole order) but they are good quality and I think will last many years. In fact, unless they degrade in the sun, I could easily see them lasting more than the predicted 10 years.
