Has anyone got a tried and tested way to get rid of onion fly, and has anyone tried a flame gun on their soil to see if it kills off the fly?

The flies hatch twice yearly and will travel up to 1km. The only way I know is netting.

Yes it's root fly I was referring to, that's why I was wondering if a weed burner, one of the paraffin burners, would heat the soil enough to kill off any egg's and hibernating flyes?
